Physician Volunteers
Welcome Physicians! We are so happy that you are interested in teaching students and serving patients in need. Arbor Free Clinic is a student-run organization overseen by Dr. Lars Osterberg and Dr. Ian Tong, the Clinic’s medical directors. Arbor Clinic is open every Sunday from 11a.m.-2p.m. We accept about 20 patients per Sunday, and typically you should be done seeing your last patient by 3:00 p.m. Arbor is a non-emergency acute care clinic, and there is no charge for any of the services or medications we provide. For those patients seeking a primary care physician, we try to refer them to free or subsidized care in their area.
As a volunteer, you will work with both preclinical and clinical medical students as well as undergraduates. The Clinic is staffed with two to three physicians each Sunday. Our group of physician volunteers is quite comprehensive, ranging from pediatricians to surgeons. There is no minimum commitment. Please note that you need to be a California certified physician. If you are not Stanford faculty, you will also need to obtain volunteer clinic faculty status. Please contact us at arborclinic@stanford.edu if this pertains to you.
We offer the following services: medical care for adults and children; physical exams; sexual health services including pap smears, STD, and pregnancy tests; medications; lab tests; a monthly dermatology clinic; a monthly ophthalmology clinic, a monthly allergy clinic, a monthly musculoskeletal clinic, eyeglasses and a monthly optometry clinic; education and counseling in a friendly and supportive environment; a reading program for children in the waiting room; and an on-site San Mateo County benefits analyst to screen for public assistance benefits eligibility including free or low-cost health insurance, food stamps, housing assistance, etc. We do not provide HIV testing or immunizations at the Sunday clinic.
Arbor carries basic physical examination equipment, equipment for blood draws and lab sample collection, and many prescription drugs. Feel free to bring your own equipment, but we should have everything you will need. We look forward to seeing you at Arbor!
